Safeguarding & Wellbeing

At Little Mowgli, the safety and emotional wellbeing of children aged 0–5 are our top priorities. Our safeguarding and wellbeing practices are designed to create a secure, nurturing environment where every child feels valued and protected. From robust child protection policies to comprehensive staff training and mental health support, we are committed to fostering a space that promotes both physical safety and emotional care. This page outlines our approach, reassuring parents that their child’s wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do in our jungle-inspired nursery.

Safeguarding Policies and Procedures

Safeguarding is the foundation of our practice at Little Mowgli, ensuring that every child is protected from harm and supported to thrive. Our safeguarding policies and procedures are comprehensive, aligned with UK statutory guidance, including Keeping Children Safe in Education and the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework. These policies cover child protection, safe recruitment, risk assessments, and incident reporting, providing a robust framework for safety.

Our child protection policy outlines clear steps for identifying and responding to concerns about a child’s welfare, whether related to abuse, neglect, or other risks. All staff are trained to recognise signs of concern and follow strict protocols to report issues promptly. We maintain secure records and work closely with external agencies, such as local safeguarding boards, to ensure appropriate action is taken when needed.

Safety is embedded in our daily operations. Our premises are equipped with secure entry systems, CCTV in communal areas, and regular safety checks to prevent hazards. Activities are risk-assessed to ensure age-appropriate safety, from outdoor play in our jungle garden to sensory play in the baby room. We also have clear procedures for managing accidents, illnesses, and emergencies, including evacuation drills and medical protocols. Parents can request a copy of our full safeguarding policy from the nursery office, ensuring transparency and trust.

Trained Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) Info

At Little Mowgli, our safeguarding efforts are led by our Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), a senior staff member with specialised training in child protection. The DSL is responsible for overseeing all safeguarding matters, ensuring policies are implemented effectively and staff are equipped to handle concerns.

Our DSL holds an accredited Level 3 Safeguarding Lead qualification, renewed every two years, and undergoes regular updates to stay current with legislation and best practices. Their role includes monitoring children’s welfare, liaising with parents and external agencies, and coordinating staff training. A Deputy DSL, also fully trained, provides additional support to ensure continuous coverage.

The DSL is a point of contact for parents with concerns about their child’s safety or wellbeing. They work discreetly and sensitively, maintaining confidentiality while prioritising the child’s best interests. For example, if a parent raises a concern about a change in their child’s behaviour, the DSL will collaborate with the family and relevant staff to assess and address the issue, potentially involving external support if needed. This dedicated leadership reassures parents that safeguarding is managed with expertise and care.

Mental Health & Emotional Support Strategies

Emotional wellbeing is as critical as physical safety at Little Mowgli. We foster a nurturing environment where children feel secure to express themselves, supporting their mental health through intentional strategies rooted in our jungle-inspired ethos.

Each room includes a quiet zone—such as a cushioned nook for babies or a “jungle den” for preschoolers—where children can retreat for calm or one-on-one support. These spaces help children regulate emotions, particularly during moments of overwhelm. Our educators use positive reinforcement and model emotional language, helping children name feelings like “happy” or “frustrated,” which builds emotional literacy.

For children showing signs of anxiety or distress, we implement tailored strategies. For example, a child struggling with separation anxiety might have a consistent key worker to build trust or engage in familiar activities like storytelling to ease transitions. We also incorporate mindfulness activities, such as guided breathing or sensory play with natural materials, to promote calm and resilience.

Our staff are trained to support children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) or those experiencing emotional challenges, using tools like visual timetables or social stories to provide structure. We work with parents and specialists to create Individual Education Plans (IEPs) that address emotional needs, ensuring a cohesive approach to wellbeing.

Overview of EYFS Framework

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is a UK-wide framework that sets the standards for the learning, development, and care of children from birth to five years old. It provides a structured yet flexible approach to early education, ensuring that children receive high-quality care and learning experiences that promote their growth.

The EYFS is built around seven key areas of learning and development, divided into prime and specific areas. The three prime areas are:

Communication and Language

Developing listening, understanding, and speaking skills.

Physical Development

Encouraging movement, coordination, and healthy habits.

Personal, Social, and Emotional Development

Building self-confidence, relationships, and emotional resilience.

Literacy

Introducing early reading and writing skills.

Mathematics

Exploring numbers, shapes, and problem-solving.

Understanding the World

Discovering people, communities, and the environment.

Expressive Arts and Design

Fostering creativity through art, music, and imaginative play.

The EYFS framework emphasises a balance between adult-led and child-initiated activities, with play at its core. It also highlights the importance of ongoing observation and assessment to track progress and tailor support to each child’s needs.

At Little Mowgli, we embrace the EYFS as a guiding principle, ensuring that every activity aligns with its standards while remaining engaging and fun.

Staff Training and First Aid Certifications

Our team’s expertise is central to our safeguarding and wellbeing commitment. All staff undergo rigorous training to ensure they are equipped to protect and care for children effectively. This begins with thorough safer recruitment processes, including enhanced DBS checks and reference verification, to ensure only suitable candidates join our team.

Safeguarding training is mandatory for all staff, delivered annually and supplemented by regular updates. This covers recognising signs of abuse, understanding radicalisation risks, and following reporting procedures. New staff complete an induction that includes shadowing experienced colleagues to embed safeguarding practices.

First aid is another priority. All staff, who are Level 3 and above, hold a Paediatric First Aid certificate, renewed every three years, ensuring immediate response to injuries or medical emergencies. Training includes CPR, choking management, and handling allergic reactions, with regular drills to maintain readiness. We also have staff trained in administering medication, following strict protocols to meet individual health needs.

Ongoing professional development includes workshops on mental health, SEN support, and behaviour management, enabling staff to respond sensitively to diverse needs. This comprehensive training ensures our team is confident, competent, and caring, providing parents with peace of mind.

Partnership with Parents for Emotional Wellbeing

Collaboration with parents is vital for supporting children’s emotional wellbeing. We view parents as partners, working together to create a consistent, supportive experience between home and nursery. Our communication tools—daily app updates, learning diaries, and termly meetings—keep parents informed about their child’s emotional and developmental progress.

We encourage parents to share insights about their child’s needs or home experiences, which helps us tailor our approach. For example, if a child is adjusting to a new sibling, we might introduce role-play activities to ease their transition. Our Parent Resources page offers tips on managing emotions at home, such as creating bedtime routines or using storytelling to discuss feelings. For children with specific needs, we collaborate on IEPs, ensuring parents are involved in planning and reviewing support.

By prioritising safeguarding, emotional care, and strong partnerships, Little Mowgli creates a safe, nurturing environment where children thrive. Our commitment to wellbeing reassures parents that their child is in caring, capable hands.
